October 19th 2007 The fifth bi-annual Tahitian Pearl Trophy Awards took place yesterday at Home House, Portman Square, when 9 of the UK’s brightest jewellery designers were recognised for their design talents and awarded with the prestigious Tahitian Pearl Trophy. The country’s top jewellers competed in what has become one of the world’s premiere jewellery design competitions, attracting the talents of designers from over 36 countries. The judging panel was comprised of three expert judges including Jessica Andrews from Tatler, fashion designer Roksanda Ilincic and Retail Jeweller Editor, Sarah Carpin.

For the UK 2007 Trophy, Perles de Tahiti set the theme of ‘Song of the Stars’ which provides each entrant with inspiration for their piece. The competition was created by Perles de Tahiti not only to convey the cultural diversity within jewellery design but to showcase the world’s finest designers and the amazing versatility of the Tahitian pearl. The Tahitian pearl is often referred to as the black pearl but is often found in a vast array of colours ranging from pink-grey to peacock green which is often demonstrated within the winning pieces.

Entrants varied from Bond Street Jewellers to amazingly talented independent designers from across the UK. Winners included Adler, Dima, Dower Hall, Shaun Leane, Europearl, Freya Rose at Barbara Tipple, new designer Sarah Ho’ brand ,SHO and Paul Battes. The winners of the UK Tahitian Pearl Trophy heats will go forward to compete in the international competition to contend against jewellers from all over the world, for the coveted International Tahitian Pearl Trophy 2008.

Tahitian pearl jewellery has rocketed within the fashion world over recent years in the UK with designers like Alexander McQueen and Chanel featuring the pearl upon their catwalk creations. In addition Stephen Webster and Shaun Leane were amongst the first jewellers to use Tahitian pearls and remain devoted fans. It is now impossible to pass a Bond Street jewellers window without spotting one of the world’s most coveted gems, the Tahitian pearl!
